Recently there have been numerous reports of people’s Ring accounts being hacked allowing hackers to turn on your cameras without your knowledge. Crazy ass hackers will never stop. Last night I was one of those people that was hacked.
Someone was able to access my account and turn my cams to live view while I was asleep at 5am in the morning, no joke. This person also triggered my camera alarms in attempt to wake me up and to get my attention, it worked. I jumped out of bed to unplug them because I knew something wasn’t right. I then immediately went to my Ring app and noticed my cameras are accessed in the Event History for each device, I know creepy as fuck right?!
After finding out, I quickly went online to find that other people fell victim to what I just experienced. I then turn two-factor authentication on to further protect my account. An hour goes by and then a text comes through from Ring notifying me that someone is trying access my system again. I knew right then and there my account was hacked. In addition to setting two-step authentication I updated my password and haven’t had any issues since.
Long story short, enable two-step authentication and use a strong password for any device that may be vulnerable to hackers invading on your privacy.
If you’re not tech savvy and have a hard time creating strong passwords, use the following password strength tool. I use this tool when creating new passwords.
